FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • When can I start?
ans. Anytime .. Our school is a continuous running operation. There are no sessions or specific start dates.

  • Wont it be difficult for me to jump right into training when the rest of the class has much more experience?
ans. No .. Everyone else in class has been in the same exact situation. Generally newer students get much more one-on-one training to get them up to a comfortable speed to train with the rest of the class.

  • I have a physical ailment (i.e. Elbow problem), can I still join and progress in Karate?
ans. Yes .. Just about everyone who joins class has some kind of issue: knee, elbow, shoulder, weight, age, back problems, asthma, etc., however, they train to become the best than can be with what ever limitations they may have. Most of these limitations become transparent after some significant time in training.

  • Is there anything special I have to do when I first join?
Ans. Yes .. There are two forms that must be filled out. One is a student application form which must be signed, and the other is a one page questionnaire about your interest in Karate.

  • How long will it take me to make Black Belt?
ans. As long as it takes you to meet all the requirements set forth by both Zentokukai and the Zentokukai of Chester County Karate-Do school. There are no set times to achieve the Black Belt rank. It's a combination of performance, commitment, maturity, and knowledge. Generally it takes one several years to accomplish this. It could be 3 years or it could be 10 years. It all depends on your commitment to learn.

  • Will my belt rank be honored from another school when I join your Karate school?
ans. Depends on the student's situation.
    > Any former Zentokukai student will have his/her last belt rank honored.
    > Students from other Shorin-Ryu or Shorinji-Ryu organizations may have any belt rank up to his/her last belt rank honored. This is generally up to the teacher's discretion.
    > Generally students from different styles will have to start from the white belt rank. If the student is good, he/she will progress very fast in our school.

  • What should I wear when I first join?
Ans. Loose clothing .. Wear anything that is loose. i.e. Sweat pants, shorts, sweat shirt, etc. Do not be concerned with foot wear, because we train in our bare feet.

  • How important is it that Martial Arts classes be taught in a exclusively Martial Arts room/building?
ans. It's not all that important. The nice thing about Martial Arts is that it can be taught anywhere: a basement, garage, YMCA, outside, warehouse, etc. Having a ornate Karate school is nice, but not necessary for quality instruction. In the 25+ years I've owned a school, I taught at the YMCA, garage, my own building, outside on grass lawn, and at a dance studio. Zenshu (Sensei Walter Dailey) said that back in the 60's, he participated in Karate class, under Sensei Zenryo Shimabukuro, wherever they found room. It wasn't until later in the 1960's that Sensei Shimabukuro was fortunate enough to build his own Dojo.

  • Are there any female in class?
Ans. Yes .. but that should not be a criteria for joining, not joining, or learning.

  • Other schools offer Black Belt ranks for 5, 6, and 7 year olds. How come your school doesn't?
Ans. Achieving Black Belt in Zentokukai is a very high honor. We do not promote students to this level unless they meet all of our requirements. Our requirements for Black Belt include a minimum age of 17, and have a certain level of both physical and mental maturity. This individual must be able to handle themselves against an adult.
